Wool, oriental & specialty rug cleaning at home
A wool, Persian or oriental rug isn't a standard bedroom carpet. Natural fibres, traditional dyes, hand-knotted structures — every detail changes what can and can't be done. Our technicians work in-home across Montreal and the South Shore with protocols calibrated to each fibre type.
Why specialty rugs demand a different approach
Natural wool, oriental rugs (Persian, Moroccan, Turkish) and quality synthetic rugs respond differently to moisture, chemistry and mechanical agitation. Over-aggressive extraction can bleed the dye on a traditional rug; poorly controlled moisture can felt wool fibres.
We apply the principle of minimum effective pressure: enough to remove soil, not enough to damage the rug's construction. That means evaluating weave type, pile density and dye stability before anything else.
Why trust Groupe Avril with your specialty rugs
- Pre-service assessment of fibre type, construction method (knotted, woven, tufted) and dye stability.
- Tighter moisture control than a standard synthetic carpet — less saturation, more predictable drying.
- pH-neutral products on natural wool to prevent felting and distortion.
- Straight talk on limits: if a stain or colour incident risks making things worse, we say so before starting.
What this service typically includes
- Visual inspection: fibre type, dyes, weakened or stained zones.
- Dye stability test on a discrete area when needed.
- Gentle pre-treatment on stains when the fibre allows.
- Controlled extraction cleaning with product matched to the rug type.
- Assisted drying and care guidance to maintain the rug's shape post-service.
Who this service is designed for
Owners of inherited or valuable Persian and oriental rugs; large natural wool rugs in living or dining rooms; high-quality dense-pile synthetic rugs; buyers or sellers where rug condition affects value.
Situations where a stain, dust build-up, or lived-in odour affects a piece you don't want to replace.
Method adapted to fibre type
On wool and natural fibres, we reduce injection pressure and limit moisture exposure time. We use balanced-pH cleaning agents (between 5 and 7) to protect the keratin structure of wool.
On dense synthetics (polypropylene, polyester, quality nylon), we can apply a more energetic cycle similar to our standard residential work. In all cases, dye stability is verified before full extraction.
What to expect after the visit
Colours often revived, pile more upright and even, reduction of odours absorbed by natural fibres.
Some permanent stains on older rugs or certain dye bleeding cannot be corrected by cleaning alone — we always communicate this before the visit.
Field feedback
What clients emphasize
« The technician knew the cleaning process inside out and exactly what my carpets needed to look like new again. Outstanding work at a fair price. »
FAQ
Questions clients
Can you clean a valuable Persian or Afghan rug?
Yes, if the rug's condition allows it. We always start with a fibre and dye evaluation to confirm the cleaning is appropriate and safe for the piece.
Is there a dye bleed risk on my oriental rug?
That's the primary risk with naturally dyed antique rugs. We perform a colour stability test before any extraction so we can identify and adjust.
Can cleaning felt or distort a wool rug?
Over-wet or too-hot cleaning can felt wool. We control water temperature and moisture duration precisely to prevent this.
How long to dry a thick wool rug?
Longer than a synthetic — typically 4 to 12 hours depending on thickness and room airflow. We advise scheduling when the room can be easily ventilated.
